Our Heavy Vehicle Licence Courses

Below you can see the details regarding our three most popular courses, each designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge you are required to possess in order to get on the road on your own. But that’s not all – as we continue to improve our heavy vehicle course offer, we can now proudly say that we are at your service when you wish to acquire LR and MR licence, as well as take up a dangerous goods course, bus authority course, or condition B removal training.

Our mission is to become a go-to driving school for every local who wishes to participate in a heavy vehicle licence course and gain new or additional skills that will make them a reliable and competent heavy vehicle driver.

Light Rigid (LR) Licence

A Light Rigid (MR) Licence allows you to drive:

  • Small trucks with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) up to 8 tonnes. Any towed trailer must not weigh more than nine tonnes GVM
  • Buses that seat more than 12 adults including the driver and a GVM up to 8 tonnes.

    Requirements:

    • Have held a class C licence, (except a learner licence) or equivalent for one year or more. Any time you’ve spent on a P1 licence counts, but you can’t practice to drive an LR vehicle, or upgrade to an LR licence until you hold a P2 or full class C licence
    • Pass the LR knowledge test
    • Pass an eyesight test
    • Successfully complete HVCBA, or pass a Roads and Maritime driving test.

    Medium Rigid (MR) Licence

    A Medium Rigid (MR) Licence allows you to drive:

    • Trucks and buses with a GVM more than eight tonnes and two axles
    • Any towed trailer must not weigh more than nine tonnes GVM.

    Also offered:

    Road Ranger License & Condition B Removal

    • Constant mesh trucks equipped with road ranger or crash box transmissions
    • Courses for automatic and syncromesh-equipped trucks

    Requirements:

    • Have held a class C licence, (except a learner licence) or equivalent for one year or more. Any time you’ve spent on a P1 licence counts, but you can’t practice to drive an MR vehicle, or upgrade to an MR licence until you hold a P2 or full class C licence
    • Pass the MR knowledge test
    • Pass an eyesight test
    • Successfully complete HVCBA, or pass a Roads and Maritime driving test.

    • Rigid vehicles (Truck, bus, tow trailer) with three or more axles
    • Vehicles with GVM up to 9 tonnes, and much more

    Requirements:

    • Have held a class C licence, (except a learner licence) or equivalent for two years or more
    • Pass the HR knowledge & eyesight test
    • Successfully complete HVCBA, or pass a Roads and Maritime driving test

    Heavy Combination (HC) Truck Licence

    Improve your career by driving:

    • Any type of articulated truck with three or more axles including unladen dolly
    • A Prime mover with one semi-trailer
    • HR vehicle towing a single trailer with a GVM greater than 9 tonnes

    Our HC course covers:

    • Pre-operational check and cabin drill
    • Trailer coupling and uncoupling
    • Start, move off, shut down and secure
    • Management of steering, gears, brakes and accelerator
    • Create, maintain and protect crash avoidance space
    • Application of road rules and directions
    • Reversing and parking
    • Hill stops and starts
    • Load securing
    • Trailer coupling and uncoupling
    • Final competency assessment

    Requirements:

    • A class MR or HR licence which you’ve held for at least a year
    • Completion of the Roads and Maritime Services drivers knowledge test
    • The HVCBA guidebook to read before starting the training

    Multi Combination (MC) Licence

    Be an expert with our MC Courses for:

    • B-doubles
    • Prime mover, low loader dolly and low loader trailer combinations
    • Road trains

    Requirements:

    • Have held an HR or HC licence or equivalent for at least one year
    • Pass an MC knowledge test
    • Pass an eyesight test
    • Successfully complete HVCBA. If you hold an HR licence, you’ll need to pass an HC
    • assessment before you can start MC training
